Gloucester Harbor

The city of Gloucester is renowned for its Fisherman's Monument, dedicated to the men and women who've lost their lives working at sea. Gloucester was the community featured in the book and film The Perfect Storm--especially the Crow's Nest Tavern--and is the home of Gorton Seafoods.
Baker's Island Light

A boat trip from Beverly to Gloucester involves navigating the entire southern shore of Cape Ann. This means charting a course between the Misery Islands and Baker's Island, then heading ENE past Singing Beach, Kettle Cove, and Magnolia Harbor. The East Point lighthouse marking the Eastern entrance to Gloucester is visible for miles.
Gloucester claims to be the oldest seaport in the United States. The city's history can be read in the buildings that line its shores.
The Tenpound Island Lighthouse in Gloucester Harbor

Gloucester Harbor has long inspired artists, including Fitz Hugh Lane and Winslow Homer. Within the harbor just past Tenpound Island, a small peninsula called Rocky Neck is home to a vibrant artists' colony and a score of galleries.

Rocky Neck's cove is also the location of several waterfront restaurants, including the Madfish Grill (above). We tied Kilty's Wake up to the Madfish float and went up the gangway for a light supper.
A cable layer returns to port

Returning to Beverly, we passed Little Misery Island to starboard. The Misery Islands were named by a logger who was caught offshore for three December days during a northeast snowstorm in the 1620's.
