Clearwater Beach is usually listed among the top ten beaches in the continental U.S. It is more than 100 yards wide, its pure white sand extending the length of the key. I discovered the Palm Pavilion by accident last winter, but was lured back by the promise of indolent afternoons in the beach chairs under the umbrella, my trusty soft-sided cooler at my side. This year I read short story collections by Richard Russo (
The Whore's Child) and Annie Proulx (
Heart Songs) that I somehow had missed. I also had the pleasure of watching my lady friend's blonde hair grow progressively curlier on each day of her visit.

The Palm Pavilion Beach Bar and Restaurant (behind the palm trees) is as friendly, colorful, and funky as you could want. Live music is featured every day. Stopping in for an appetizer, a cold beverage, and the exotic melodies of steel drums after a day at the beach does much to sluice away the effects of the New England winter.

I returned to snow and chill factors below zero, but I am tanned (well, for an Irisher) and smiling. The Palm Pavilion is my club, and I'd like to invite everyone over.

be right there!
Those photos are so inviting!!!
Clearwater beach was one of the very few places I've been & that was when I was 16. I cannot believe it is one of the top beaches from what I can remember.
Your photos show a whole new side.
Sounds like you had a great time.

That is the whitest sand I have ever seen. Almost as white as that pristine patch found under the bangs of Irish kids.
Would love to hear a review of HeartSongs. Have it on my shelf and have tried to read it umpteen times. Just can't do it, though. Seems unreadable to me. Not a dis on the writing--maybe more my mood every time I've taken it up? Don't know and can't explain. Did you like it?
That is not even nice...pictures like these in the dead of winter.
He reads on the beach, notices his lady friend's blonde hair gets curlier, and uses the word "sluice." Perhaps I'll be joining the fan club. I enjoyed the post ;-)
My buddy introduced me to Clearwater some time ago. love it!! Especially the bars on the beach.
Wow, you actually made me miss Florida for the first time in 5 years......
I miss real seafood.
I am glad you and your lady friend had a great time.
