Striper Fishing, Plymouth Harbor

Sean, my colleague and long-time fishing partner, likes to be on the water at first light. He owns the boat, so I don't argue. We are rewarded by seeing the dawn break over Plymouth Harbor.
Plymouth's fleet of whale-watching boats await the throngs of cetacean fans. The boats go out to Stellwagen Bank. The usual sightings are of pilot whales and humpbacks; less commonly seen are fin whales. Behind the whale-watching boats, the masts of the Mayflower replica are visible.
As we survey the area for terns and gulls that flock to wherever bass are feeding, we are treated to another panorama of sun, sea, and clouds.
Bug Light marks a rock pile in Plymouth Harbor. At low tide, the hazards are clearly visible. Just after I took this shot, we spotted our first flurry of working birds and feeding bass.
We caught more than forty bass, all released healthy. This one was the largest, at twenty seven inches--one inch short of being a keeper. Holding them with your thumb in their mouths prevents them from flopping. When released, this one was gone with a flick of its tail. You wouldn't want to try this with a bluefish.
When the Goodyear Blimp began circling above, we just assumed that it was there to record our fishing excellence. Only later did we find out that it was the day of Plymouth's annual waterfront celebration. The Myles Standish (he of "Why don't you speak for yourself" fame) Monument is visible on the hilltop.

I first visited Plymouth Harbor with my parents when I was just a kid. As I recall, we were looking all over for 'Plymouth Rock' when someone pointed out what appeared to be a pebble with a plaque affixed ~ my normally enthusiastic mother exclaimed, "You mean that little thing is it?!" Oh, how we laughed.

The pictures are gorgeous!

The Goodyear blimp hangar is near where I live. That thing is truly surreal.

I should get a pic and post it. But you wouldn't get an idea of the size.

Nice snaps, Paul.

Never once been fishing, was in Massachusetts for one day a few years ago...I can always count on you for great armchair experiences! I can smell the salt air through your pictures and stories. I'm anticipating you'll spend Labor Day on the water or doing something equally different from my holiday and look forward to the whiff.

NIIICE fishy! My son caught one about 38 inches, off of LI. Biggest fish he ever caught, but his dumb father grabbed the pole out of his hands b/c he was afraid he'd loose it. MEN! jeeze~
