On Tuesday, September twenty-fifth, the forecast called for unseasonably warm temperatures that would last through the night and into Wednesday. We decided to take advantage of the summery evening and the nearly full moon by taking Kilty's Wake on a night cruise.
Despite the soft, warm breeze, we were reminded of the passing of the equinox when the sun set at 6:30. By the time we left the slip, the moon had risen and was well up in the night sky, casting its light on the glimmering ocean. We cruised slowly along the coast, the sea surface barely rippling behind us, the motor quiet enough to allow our hearing the gentle peals of the bell buoys. Out toward Baker's Island, there seemed to be an intense pool of moonlight, but we knew it would recede as we approached it.
There was plenty of ambient light, but, alas, not nearly enough for my digital camera, which revealed an inky blackness dotted with yellow instead of the silky moonlight we were enjoying.
