Carolina on My Mind

My brother claims that I am giving short shrift to the South Carolina portion of our fishing/boating/eating adventure. Apparently, the ACE (an acronym for the Ashapoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers) Basin near Beaufort is part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System, and we can expect to encounter bald eagles, loggerhead turtles, and myriad other species. Our boyhood summers were spent on, in, and under the waters of Waquoit Bay and Child's River, a part of this system on Cape Cod.

I have some familiarity with the area from visits to Charleston and Hilton Head, and perhaps a soupcon of appreciation of Gullah culture from Pat Conroy's excellent book, The Water Is Wide. I am told to be ready for incomparable shrimpburgers.

The civilized, Bethany Beach couples weekend begins tomorrow. On Monday, the brothers head south.
