The Fourth of July

Just before dusk on the evening of the fourth, we took the boat out to Beverly's West Beach for the fireworks display. We anchored about 100 yards upwind of the barge.

Other boats were in the process of anchoring or rafting. Everyone wanted a front row seat for the show.

Behind us, Great Misery Island's "Cocktail Cove" was mobbed with boats, many of which had been there since early afternoon. The whoops and boat horns let us know that the crowd was well oiled and ready for fireworks.

A few intrepid skippers had anchored even closer than we had. I wondered if the fireworks would be able to outdo the sunset.

The sunset got even more intense as it changed from orange to red. Red sky at night, sailor's delight.

As darkness fell, we were joined by dozens more boats. The combination of the nighttime camera setting and the motion of the sea made for a time-lapse exposure of the running lights.

The West Beach display did not disappoint. Boaters trumpeted their approval with a cacophony of boat horns.

Two miles across Salem Sound, the Marblehead fireworks finale followed immediately after the finale at West Beach. We headed back to the slip and got home in time for the end of the Boston Pops Esplanade concert and...more fireworks.
