Session Americana
So what would happen if an outstanding Celtic roots band like Great Big Sea performed the quintessential Townes van Zant classic "Pancho and Lefty"? It would probably sound something like these guys from Cambridge and Somerville. They are called Session Americana, and they'll be playing in Mashpee (the Commons) on August 7th, two days before we get to the Popponesset cottage. Dammit.

first, i adore Great Big Sea. and i really enjoy the way that they took the irish style to this. of course, the irish/celtic musical tradition was as essential to country music as african and blues was to jazz and rock and roll.
they have captured well the main theme of this song. that enigmatic saying without saying that runs all through.
sitting around a table with drinks on it captures the spirit and tone of it perfectly.
it's beautiful.
and yes, townes was a friend. i tell folks that he wasn't a "good" friend, but rather, a close friend. he was far to self-absorbed and driven by his muse to be good. but those same qualities are what he used to not only cross my personal boundries, he fucking obliterated them and made them meaningless.
