Oak Bluffs is one of the three larger towns on Martha's Vineyard, along with
Edgartown and Vineyard Haven. The photograph above shows the main intersection just above the head of the harbor. To the left is the Strand (missing the
t and the
r) theater; in the center, the information kiosk; and to the right, the oldest working carousel in the United States.

Just beyond downtown are the Methodist Campgrounds and Tabernacle. Over the decades, tents ringing the open-air meeting house have been replaced by dozens of Victorian cottages. Each August, on "Illumination Night", the campground is lit up by thousands of paper lanterns.

Over at the ferry dock operated by the Steamship Authority, the freight carrier
Katama prepares to dock.
Anyone can cool off at the beach. I recommend the dark recesses of the
Offshore Ale Company, where you can sample island-brewed IPA or Hefeweisen and throw your peanut shells on the floor.

Back at Oak Bluffs Harbor, a great way to misspend an hour or two would be sitting up on the deck at
Nancy's, trying out some rum concoction and savoring steamed PEI mussels. If you miss your boat, they'll always be another one.
