Columbus in Hispanola

Columbus made several trips to Hispanola and established a settlement at what is now the northwest corner of the Dominican Republic, not far from the Haitian border. As with many of the European attempts to establish colonies in the New World, this effort was marred by violence coming from both indigenous peoples and settlers.

The site of the settlement now features a museum and a walking tour.

More than 1500 settlers Spanish settlers were bought to the site by the Italian explorer.

An aging skiff, known locally as a panga, is propelled by sculling.

To the northwest of the settlement site are the mountains of Haiti.
