Gratuitous Luperon Images

As we had done in Cancun last winter, we signed on to a trimaran sailing/snorkeling excursion.

Our craft at anchor off a remote beach/village

The beach was a popular transient anchorage.

We headed inland across a lagoon to reach the snorkeling site.

The villagers live in a beautiful location but are very poor. Many families sell handmade shell trinkets and whole conch shells. We stopped to admire a newborn in one of the houses; the mother was 14 years old. "There is no television," explained a resident, "so there are many babies."

Ice cream! A boy sold ice cream from a cooler on the back of his motor bike, and a Chilean/Canadian couple in our snorkeling party decided to treat the village children. Their gesture did not go over well with the adult vendors, who wanted the money spent on their wares.
