Cumberland Island Birds

Following Pratt's Trail through the forest, we encountered a rafter of wild turkeys. As we approached to take photographs, the big tom warned us away with fierce gobbling, then gathered up his hens and disappeared into the underbrush.
A funny bird is a pelican,
his mouth can hold more than his bellycan.
He can hold in his beak, enough for a week,
And I don't see how in the hellican.
-- Dixon Lanier Merritt

A great blue heron flew in and stalked the shallows among the smaller shore birds.

I figured that the heron wouldn't let me get too close--and he didn't--so I was ready with the camera for his sudden departure.
