Tulum, located along the Mayan Riviera 120 km south of Cancun, is the only site where Mayan ruins are located alongside the ocean. Although not as dramatic as the Kukulkan Pyramid at Chichen Itza, the ruins at Tulum reveal a walled city that was presumably a prime Yucatan center of commerce during the Mayan period.

The ruins occupy a stony bluff that overlooks several small white sand beaches, thought to have been landing areas for Mayan trading vessels. Visitors frequently tour the ruins, then spend some time cooling off in the turquoise waters.

Kathleen had been to Tulum once before, and had blissful memories of the gentle, inviting surf at the beach below the ruins. She was gratified to return to those mystical, salubrious waters once again.

The walled city is now inhabited primarily by iguanas. We saw at least six of them. They are not aggressive, but wary of humans, especially if juveniles of either species are about.

'mystical, salubrious waters...' I like that ~ very descriptive!
I missed Tulum when I was in Cancun a few years ago ~ it looks lovely. Well, except perhaps for those giant iguana thingies. You know, I have nightmares that look a lot like that bottom pic. Talk about wary...
Looks like you had a wonderful time! :)
...and here I thought it was somewhere between Brindisi and Corfu, that the blue begins...but I see I was wrong...
Your description makes me want to sink into those waters immediately.
My son just went to Cancun & all they did was party, so looking at his photos, I really had no desire to go there. BUT, looking at yours....hmmmmmmmmm, I think, I might just change my mind. These photos are beautiful, makes you want to be there.
Thanks for sharing & making me envious...; (

Such a beautiful view! (The ocean, not the iguanas!! I can't see why some people have them as pets. Do nothing for me!)
I remember the first time we were in Cancun....that color is unreal. I could spend hours just watching it.
We visited Chichen Itza....and a little ruins in Cancun that was near our hotel. There were iguanas everywhere. We all loved that...you can imagine the kids.
:)
I recall being fascinated by these ruins when we saw them 9 years ago. And yes, it's beautiful. But those iguanas creeped me out then and they did here, too.
We loved Cancun and Chichen Itza in the early 90s. It looks like things are much the same and recovered from the last storm. We also went to the Isle and your tale is hilarious. I enjoyed reminiscing through your gorgeous photos which capture the brilliant color so well.
