Kids these days, they don't value a dollar
Don't like chewin', but they sure can swaller
Wasn't that way in my younger days
Something wrong with kids these days
Times ain't now, Buddy, like they used to be
I'd have more fun but the women are so hard to please
--Tom Rush
I am pleased that Tom Rush's curmudgeonly lyrics do not apply to my own kids.
My son Matt is getting married two weeks from tomorrow. The wedding is in Amherst, Massachusetts, on the campus of Amherst College. My daughter Erin Kate and I are both crazy about Christine, his bride.
As for Erin Kate, she is moving out tomorrow--again. She lived with me briefly after her college graduation, after her volunteer year in Philadelphia with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, and after another year of living with friends. I told her that moving out, like drowning, is final after the third time.
I'll miss some of Erin's classic behaviors, such as spraying the countertop with cleanser with the sprayer nozzle turned to a jet so she doesn't have to move from the sink. Just yesterday I took two of her opened spaghetti sauce jars out the refrigerator to combine the contents.
"Dad, don't," she said.
"Why not?"
"Because one of them has mold in it."
"But Erin, that means that you had to open it, see the mold, then close it and put it back in the fridge."
"I guess it does."
Best wishes to Matt and Christine on the occasion of their wedding, and good luck to Erin Kate in her new apartment.

Congratulations to your son..
If you are as lucky as you seem to be you are gaining a daughter, not a daughter-in-law!!
Erin is my kind of girl.
Congratulations to all of you on the upcoming wedding! My grandparents got married in the Mount Holyoke Chapel, only a few miles from Amherst. I think a June wedding in the Connecticut River Valley would be about as perfect occasion as you all could enjoy.
So does this mean Christine went to Amherst? The competitors join in holy matrimony?
Kind of like my 17 y/o putting a 2 litre back in the fridge with less than a teaspoon of soda in it, huh?

Oh, the joys of parenthood! My son has returned home for half the summer (has decided to do take summer classes) and I am enjoying the brief moments he alights in my orbit before he darts off again with his friends. But that is as it should be - we raise 'em so they can leave, right? (And in your case, three times!)
Happy wedding - how lovely!
And welcome home from Blighty! I'm off over there next month for a home visit,
Vicky
Checking in...hugs and kisses..wedding bliss and moldie sauces in the fridge..what a combo!
Miss you~
At least she knew it was mold.
Thank goodness for Erin. I don't feel so alone now, knowing she's on the planet.
Oh, congratulations to you all! I love a June wedding.
Erin sounds like a doll, and it speaks volumes that she thinks so highly of her future sis-in-law.

(Yeah, I think I spelled that right... :)
I'm sitting here smiling as I write this. Wow. Congratulations, on the wedding, and also on having raised such terrific kids. And I've had similar conversations, regarding the moldy spaghetti sauce, with each of mine.

Congratulations on raising 2 fine kids, Paul. Considering the times that we live in, that's nothing short of a miracle. You're also fortunate that your son is marrying someone you can love and respect. I wish I could say the same for my oldest, who is tying the knot in October despite my repeated objections, and offers of financial bribery.
May they enjoy many years of happiness together.
Your stories of your children always warm my heart.
I'm sure not looking forward to the day my kids leave home.:(
