Bridges

For some reason, it took until October before we decided to explore Beverly's inner harbor and the Danvers River. It was probably because of the bridges--you need to get past two swing bridges within the first mile. However, in its own way, the passage was as rewarding as any bright summer cruise along the coast.

We followed the mini-tug Rufus toward the head of the harbor and the river (Chaka Khan didn't seem to be aboard). There is plenty of room under the Salem-Beverly highway bridge, but the MBTA bridge just beyond it is another story.

Looking back at the MBTA swing bridge...the bridge-tender times the openings between trains. He monitors channel 13.

You don't go too far before you come to the Kernwood Bridge, another swing bridge where the tender monitors channel 13.

Looking back, you can see all three bridges.

At the Danversport Marina, an ominous row of cormorants awaits the next school of unsuspecting baitfish.
